TO A CERTAIN DEGREE SACREDNESS IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER

In 1933, the cruise Pâtris II sponsored by CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne), left Marseilles, its final destination being Athens; the main representatives of the Modern Movement were aboard, one among them being the architect Le Corbusier. 36 years later, Pier Paolo Pasolini will reenact in filmic terms another journey, this time from the East to the West, that of Euripide’s Medea, played by Maria Callas.

“To a certain degree sacredness is in the eye of the beholder” is an on-going project that takes as its starting point these two journeys, inserting them into a larger narrative related to Greek modernity and the West-East ever-pending discourse. Articulated in subsequent versions or acts, it examines scenarios and shifting perspectives concerned with European imaginaries and their relation to a mythicized past.

In the work hybrid constructions referring to Medea’s archaic world, primitivism and geographical locations of the Orient, interact with visual codes inspired by European modernism. In the resulting installations, these fragile monuments serve as silent guides, suggesting a cultural discord between a foreign-installed rational ethos and a mythical pre-modern mentality.

In the expansive installation for the Athens Festival sound becomes the second layer of interpretation of the multiple readings identified on the body of Greek modernity. Two selected audio sources, an opera by Maria Callas and the main theme of Pasolini’s film, will become the basis for the realization of three sound performances, in a manner of exploring cultural conflict as sonic dissonance.
